Portland Company-Portland, Maine
The Portland Company is a nine acre industrial site with a commanding location on the eastern end of the waterfront. It was established in 1846 as a locomotive foundry to build railroad equipment for the connection between Portland and Montreal. It was a significant New England medium to heavy steel fabricator until 1978. It had a proud history of serving New England manufacturer’s and utilities while building 628 locomotives 160 ships (including Iron Clads), equipment for the Panama Canal and so on.
